Dawsons Wagner named states Gatorade POY
Dawson senior fourth in state in goals scored

Alexander Dawson senior Olivia Wagner was named the Gatorade Colorado girls soccer player of the year on Tuesday.

The 5-foot-10 midfielder has helped guide the Mustangs (16-1) to their winningest season in school history and into the Class 3A state quarterfinals. Dawson hosts Denver Christian at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Wagner scored 29 goals this season, fourth best in the state, and 73 in her prep career. She also serves as a captain for the U.S. Youth Soccer Region IV Olympic Development Team.

"Olivia Wagner's a dynamic playmaker," said Nate Shotts, Colorado Youth Soccer's ODP technical director. "She can be a game-breaker if she wants to be. She has the ability to score goals, but mostly she's an assist-type player. She organizes other players well."

The all-state player as a junior has already signed a letter of intent to play for Maryland next year.

But her selection was also based on academic achievement and community service.

Wagner has maintained a 3.31 grade point average. She volunteers in the Boulder Humane Society's foster care program, spent a week her sophomore year at the Project Cure in Alamosa to sort medical supplies for Third World countries and has donated her time to the Children's Hospital and Community Food Share.
