Cumberland Valley advances to District 3-AAA soccer quarterfinals

pennlive.com

Cassie Pecht's strike from the edge of the penalty area with 1:13 gone in the second overtime -- off a Jena Wiest dish from the right flank -- propelled Cumberland Valley past Mechanicsburg 1-0 in a compelling District 3-AAA scrap Wednesday night at windy Eagle View Stadium.

Pecht's finish also popped the soccer-playing Eagles (18-3-0) into Saturday's quarterfinal-round twinbill at Northeastern High School in Manchester, where Seth Lehman's third-seeded club will meet Penn Manor in the back end of that two-fer.

Shelbie Rackley preserved her 12th shutout with a seven-save effort, while CV also got some terrific efforts from backs Mary Kate Lowry, Brianna Bellido, Mackenzie Neal and Elise Krause -- especially when the strong winds were blowing into their faces in the second half and first OT.

Mechanicsburg (11-8-1) also put together a terrific defensive performance in front of keeper Nicki Keiser (5 saves), using five backs for much of the game's 96-plus minutes. Jodie Zelenky, K.K. Fisher, Emma Galinskie, Rosie White and Tesse Meischeid were especially effective in the opening half, when CV was camped in the Wildcats' defensive third.

Wouldn't be enough to close down the remarkable Pecht, as the freshman midfielder tucked a blast just under the crossbar from the top edge of the penalty area to win it.

First-half finishes from Elaina White and Marie D'Angelo -- along with six saves from keeper Jenna Cavrich -- sent Red Land wheeling into the quarters with a 2-0 victory over Wilson. Up next for Jamie Miller's Patriots (16-4-0) is a Saturday date with top-seeded Manheim Twp. in the second of two at Hersheypark Stadium. Township advanced with a 3-0 conquest of fellow Lancaster-Lebanon League playmate Elizabethtown.

Second-seeded Hershey (18-2-1) also advanced, blanking Conestoga Valley 3-0 in the front end of a double-header at Henry Hershey Field. Riliegh McHugh netted two goals and Ali Rogers one for the Trojans, who avenged last year's round-of-16 loss to CV. Kate Wagner pitched the shutout by making three saves, two fewer than the Buckskins' Amanda McGowan. Hershey will return to action Saturday at Landis Field, where the Trojans will square off against Governor Mifflin. Mifflin doubled up Central York 4-2 in another round-of-16 encounter.

Thanks to a 1-0 victory over Warwick in the back end of the Henry Hershey Field twinbill, Lower Dauphin became the fourth and final Mid-Penn Conference side to reach the 3-AAA quarters, Carrie Diamond netted the game-winner early in the second half, turning a Caity Fox corner into the contest's lone score. Taylor Alwine made that goal stand with a four-save effort as LD (13-2-4) toppled Warwick by a 1-0 count for the second year in a row. Diamond also had the game-winner in that contest, a quarterfinal-round scrap at Northeastern. Ironically, LD is returning to Northeastern Saturday for a match-up with Hempfield.

Hempfield moved forward by popping Shippensburg 4-1. Kylee Lantz, Kelli Joline, Kristin Eck and Laura Myers connected for the Black Knights, who scored the first four goals. Rachel Brubaker spoiled the shutout with a late finish at the 77-minute mark. Warren Jones' Greyhounds (16-5) also picked up 13 saves from keeper Beth Ann Cote.

In Class AA, Brea Stewart scored two goals, the second with 7:56 gone in overtime as Middletown stretched its winning streak to eight games with a 2-1 win at Trinity. Chris Hunter's Blue Raiders (15-5) not only advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals and a scrap with Elco at Landis Field, but they also locked up a PIAA Class AA tournament berth for the first time with Wednesday night's success. Emileigh Lloyd made eight saves for Middletown, surrendering only Katie Lenz's early finish. Heather Schultz turned aside four shots for Trinity (15-3-2).

Kala Yoders buried two strikes and Taylor Shaak tacked on one -- all in the final 25-plus minutes -- as Elco sidelined Lebanon Catholic 4-2 at In The Net. Ashley Walker also scored for Kirk Keppley's Raiders (15-5-1), while Alex Snellbaker totaled six saves. Liz Rakow and Marykate McShane connected for the Beavers (10-10-0), who edged in front for the second time with 25:37 to play.

Madelyn White's score with 3:45 to go in overtime pushed Wyomissing past East Pennsboro 2-1 at Saxton Stadium. Corbin Weaver also connected for the Spartans, tying the game with just 6:20 to play in regulation. Nolan Sheely gave Jill Archer's Panthers (11-8-1) a 1-0 lead with 24:39 gone, turning Megan Hammaker's dish into the game's first score. Beth Stoddard also played impressively, making 15 saves for an East Penn side that was outshot 29-7.

Lydia Kahl netted two goals and Crystal Zerbe one as Tulpehocken sidelined Susquehanna Twp. 3-1 at Roscoe Warner Field. Laura Reichard pulled Pat Schiano's Indians (9-6-2) within a single goal at the break, but Kahl's second score with 20 minutes to go had the Trojans comfortably in front. Sarah Sonnon made 14 saves for Susquehanna, which was outshot 21-9 by the Berks Countians.

Allison Warner's score early in the second half and seven saves from Laura Kokolus made the difference in Brandywine Heights' 1-0 triumph over Bishop McDevitt at Skyline Sports Complex. Bianca Wheaton made 11 stops for the Crusaders (16-3-1), who were shut out for the first time all season.
