Elco came back from two second-half deficits to defeat Lebanon Catholic
4-2 in the District 3-AA
girls soccer
Round of
16 on Wednesday afternoon at the In The Net complex in Palmyra.
Both
times the Beavers took the lead, the Raiders (15-5-1) responded with a
goal in the following two minutes. Then Elco took the lead for good with a
score by Taylor Shaak with 10:03 left in the contest. After a throw in by
Kala Yoders into the box, the ball was touched but never controlled by
both teams before Shaak took a shot into the right side of the net.
While the Raiders held that 3-2 lead, the closest the Beavers (10-10)
came to tying it was on a shot at the top of the box by Kelsey Boehmer
that sailed wide left.
Yoders added an insurance goal with 3:49 remaining with a shot that
lofted in from the right wing.
Liz Rakow had put Lebanon Catholic up 1-0 with a shot that bounced off
of an Elco defender and into the net 2:04 into the second half.
The Raiders answered with a goal by Ashley Walker, who scored after
receiving a pass from Erika Smith.
The Beavers went up 2-1 with Marykate McShane's goal with 25:37 on the
clock. McShane gained control of a goal kick near midfield, and charged 50
yards towards the goal before shooting the ball off the inside of the
right post and into the net.
Only 33 seconds later, Yoders scored with what appeared to be a
crossing pass that hooked into the net.
Both teams had eight shots. Elco had a 5-3 edge in corners.
Alex Snellbaker made six saves for the win. Keely Schlegel stopped four
shots for Lebanon Catholic.
Elco, which clinched a state playoff spot with the win, will play the
winner of the Trinity-Middletown game in the quarterfinals on Saturday, at
a time and site to be announced.
