Golden Hawks let one get away

A long goal kick turned into the decisive goal as the Trojans upset No. 3
seed CR South.
HOLLAND - Soccer has many unwritten rules that coaches try to drum into the
heads of their players.
One of the most important is: When you're heavily favored, put the other
team away. The longer you let them hang around, the more confidence they
gain and better the chance they'll catch a break and leave you on the short
end of the score.
Council Rock South found out Tuesday what happens when you don't
put teams away.
The No. 3 seed Golden Hawks failed to convert a half-dozen excellent scoring
chances and lost a stunning, 2-1 decision to 14th-seeded Wissahickon in a
first-round game of the PIAA District One Class AAA tournament.
"I was waiting for our break to occur and hoping that the flood gates would
open for us," South coach Tim Keddie said. "Unfortunately, (Wissahickon)
countered on us, and (although) they had, I think, one scoring opportunity
in the second half, they put it in the back of the net."
Things were looking fine for the Hawks (14-3-2) in the ninth minute, when
junior Jamie Vaniver fed Alexa Crosier on a two-on-one, and the freshman
beat goalie Alyssa King low and to her right.
Less than a minute later, the Trojans (10-7-1) got the equalizer on a free
kick by Alexa Schaefer, and that's where it remained until the 50th minute.
The game-winner came after Hawks sophomore Erica Mikula slid and nudged the
ball just wide of the right post of the Trojans' goal. King's goal kick
sailed beyond midfield, where it rolled away from a South defender and onto
the foot of Lewis, who passed the ball to Alex Schaefer, and the sophomore
booted it inside the left post for the 2-1 lead. King and the defense then
made it stand up.
Advertisement A disappointed Mikula said after the game that she and her
teammates were visibly concerned at halftime.
"We were talking about who was the better team, and if we really wanted it,"
she said. "We had to go out there and we knew were going to be done (if we
lost), and we just couldn't find the back of the net."
Keddie, whose young team only loses two seniors, was philosophical in
defeat.
"For us, it was a game of missed opportunities," Keddie said. "The bottom
line is (Wissahickon) worked tremendously hard from the start of the game to
the finish, and I have to tip my hat to them."
