Tennent rally falls just short
phillyburbs.com
HOLLAND - Even though there was no official Senior Day ceremony planned for
Council Rock South's two seniors Tuesday, Jenna Cunningham and Julie
Oberholtzer decided to make their final home game a memorable event anyway.
Each scored a goal - with Cunningham netting the game-winner - as they
helped the Golden Hawks pull out a thrilling 3-2 victory over William
Tennent in a Suburban One League National Conference girls soccer game that
was in doubt until the final seconds.
The victory kept alive CR South's (13-2-2, 11-1-1 SOL) slender hopes of
winning the league, as it is a game behind Neshaminy, whose game with
Bensalem was rained out Tuesday. Tennent (9-8, 8-5 SOL) will now have to
battle with Council Rock North for third place in the conference.
"It says a lot about how good our league is that Tennent could be third.
They have a heck of a team," said Alan Nicholl, who served as CR South's
acting head coach due to Tim Keddie having a personal commitment.
It appeared the Golden Hawks would have an easy time with a 2-0 lead at
intermission.
But the Panthers quickly struck back. Junior Laura Carroll scored in the
first minute of the second half. Then freshman Angelina Liddy made a tough,
angled shot from the right side of the net to tie the score with 24 minutes
remaining.
"It really was a tale of two halves," Tennent coach James Barry said. "In
the second half we played great. We could have had more but their goalie
(Jessica Levy) made some great saves."
The Panthers outshot the Golden Hawks by a 9-1 margin in the second half
when Cunningham got the ball about 20 yards from the net.
With 14 minutes, 13 seconds remaining, she launched a shot straight down the
middle. Tennent goalie Chelsea Pritchett leapt up and got a hand on it but
the ball bounced into the side of the net for a score.
Tennent continued to attack to the very end. Carroll had a breakaway that
Levy made a diving save on. The Panthers' Alex Pero got the rebound to the
left of the net but sophomore defender Mary Kate Callahan blocked her shot
moments before the final whistle.
